Frequently Asked Questions.
1. Does my dog need to come to The Grooming Room during the Winter?
A dogs coat needs grooming throughout the year. It is sometimes thought that leaving the coat unclipped in Winter will keep the dog warm. Leaving the coat long will have the opposite affect. The coat will take longer to dry, tangle more easily and collect debris (and snowballs!!).
Central Heating, and artificial lighting causes dry skin in dogs. Bathing is essential to keep the dogs coat and skin healthy.

2. My dog gets very hot in the summer. Can I have my dog clipped short instead of handstripped?
It is a common misconception that clipping the hair shorter will make them cooler. Clipping the coat shorter will expose its skin to the sun, and drastically change the condition and texture of its coat. When it is cold, the dogs hair will stand up, trapping heat and creating an insulating blanket around the dog. In the heat, the reverse happens and hair lies flat and the winter coat would already have fallen out.
The Grooming Room staff can advice on the correct equipment to remove dead undercoat, to help the coat move more naturally and fulfil its purpose.
The Grooming Room staff use a PRO bathing system that will work through the dogs coat and loosen any dead hair. The Grooming Room staff also use a specialist dryer that blasts excess water, and any remaining dead hair out of the dogs coat.

3. My elderly dog is very difficult to groom. Can you help?
A dogs mobility, hearing, sight, and mind will probably diminish and it may be difficult for an owner to groom them without a professional groomers assistance.
Grooming is a very important aspect of an older dogs routine:
*It is important to monitor any changes in the skin and coat as this could be an indication of other medical problems.
*Due to decrease of exercise nails can become overgrown. They can grow into the pads and become painful, making walking even more difficult. The Grooming Room offers a separate nail trimming service.
*Older dogs are less flexible and will find it difficult to keep themselves clean around the back end. Faeces often matts, causing unpleasant odours and skin irritation this will also attract flies which could cause distress to your dog.
The Grooming Room has specialist grooming tables. All dogs are restrained and supported while being groomed. There is always a second member of staff available to help support the dog. We offer a “ring when ready” service so we are able to take special care, and time for each dog. We also have facilities where dogs can be exercised in a secure paddock, and rested in a kennel with covered run. The Grooming Room staff also encourage some owners to stay with their dogs to minimise stress.

4. Will my dog be put into a dog crate, when you are not grooming it?
We are very fortunate to be situated on the site of Chart Sutton Boarding Kennels and Cattery. If your pet requires a break from grooming, or if you are unable to collect your pet straight after its groom, we will allow your dog exercise in a secure paddock. We may also be able to accomodate your pet in one of our clean and comfortable kennels or cattery pens.
